About Cara
Cara Lopez Lee is the author of They Only Eat Their Husbands: A Memoir of Alaskan Love, World Travel, and the Power of Running Away (Ghost Road Press, 2010). The book explores her wild adventures and romantic misadventures during nine years in Alaska, and the year she ran away to trek around the world alone. She is the creator and primary writer of the Girls Trek Too blog, dedicated to inspiring women to approach life as an adventure. An avid traveler, writer, and photographer, she has explored Asia, Europe, Africa, Latin America, and most of the 50 United States. Her writing has earned 14 awards from the Alaska Press Club and Denver Woman's Press Club.
Cara began her writing career as a TV journalist in Alaska, where she spent nine years reporting on many unique stories, including: the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, the battle over Native subsistence rights, and the last sunset of the year in Barrow. After taking a sabbatical to travel the globe, she worked as a reporter for The Taos News, a weekly newspaper, and North Carolina Now, a PBS newsmagazine. She then spent six years writing and producing for HGTV, Discovery Health, and Food Network. Her stories have also appeared in The Los Angeles Times, Denver Post, Santa Fe New Mexican, and Wazee Journal, as well as many blogs.
Cara now writes, edits, and critique books, book proposals, and other projects for clients. She is currently writing a historical novel based on the life of her Chinese-Mexican grandmother, called Tortillas from the Canton Cafe.
When Cara's not writing or traveling, she spends her spare time hiking, skiing and dancing. Cara and her husband got married at an active volcano in Costa Rica. They survived both dangers, and now live in Denver.
